This will be yet another short post. Day 13 was spent traveling literally the entire day. We woke up, got packed, and dressed for the day. We had a 5-hour drive before being dropped off at the airport and catching a flight from Christchurch to Wellington. Now, we did this for a few reasons: we didn’t want to drive through Kaikoura and Kaiteriteri again, we didn’t want to pay for a $50 ferry when a one-way plane ticket would be about the same price, and we wanted to save time on our trip instead of spending two days wasting time at places we already explored. We were eager to get to Taupo and Rotorua on the North Island!
The bus ride was long and we were tired. There isn’t a whole lot to say about our trip towards Christchurch–where our Kiwi Experience started. All I can say is that we made a full circle around the South Island of New Zealand! Woohoo! 🙂
Around mid-afternoon, we finally made it to the airport (shout-out to driver Ben!) and checked in our heavy bags. Diana, Levi, and myself ate some much-needed fast food and hung out at the airport writing postcards, taking advantage of airport wifi (the struggle of a backpacker), and reflecting on our trip so far. As our flight was announced, we got on (sitting separately) and endured a long flight of…….FORTY FIVE MINUTES. Okay, now I need to just pause and laugh at this because that is the shortest flight I’ve ever been on! Staying on the bus would have taken HOURS to get to Wellington. Plus, the ferry to get from the South Island to the North Island. No thank you!
Our short flight to Wellington was convenient and efficient, so we were happy despite our entire day of travel. We got our bags, wandered the airport a little bit, and then went outside. We needed to get a cab to our hostel for the night. Levi, brave Levi, haggled with some cab drivers and made a deal to take us to our hostel (woo, Levi!) 🙂 . Taking a nice hot shower, reading some books, and passing out meant that we missed out on a day in Wellington… So once again, when I visit New Zealand again, I will spend more time in Wellington! 🙂
We went from the South Island to the North Island, traveling by bus and plane with our little bodies exhausted but our brains nourished with a gently used book. This ends our Day 13 out of 17 on our holiday. The South Island was absolutely stunning and to this day, I miss the beautiful sights. I do have to pat myself on the back for taking plenty of photos to look back at fondly! ❤ Four more days of our holiday adventure!
